Our Story

Russell Stowe qualified from the internationally renowned Newark School of Violin Making in 1984 then spent several years working with a well known, long established violin house in the Midlands.

Russell’s love of the craft and his growing excellent reputation led him to establish his own stringed instrument company in 1991. Over the last 26 years, Woodbridge Violins has become a leading light in the industry, attracting respected musicians from across the country. At Woodbridge Violins we supply quality violins, violas, ’cellos and bows to professional players, teachers and students of all ages and ability. We expertly repair and restore instruments and bows on site in our workshop.

Since 2005, Jonathan Evans has established himself as the principal restorer in our workshop. Moving to Suffolk from London, Jonathan previously worked at Ealing Strings for 18 years. An experienced and dedicated luthier with a huge experience of working with quality stringed instruments, Jonathan is also an accomplished cellist who plays for many local musical events.

Completing our small team is Katherine Joyson who has worked at Woodbridge Violins since 2002. Working as a professional cellist and teacher, Katherine has a working knowledge of a musician’s needs. Katherine ensures the smooth running of our shop and workshop.

Woodbridge Violins

We are situated on the Market Hill in the historic town of Woodbridge. The building dates back to the 16th century and inside is a warren of rooms filled with stringed instruments. We have music rooms where you can try our instruments and bows in a private and relaxed environment. Our large collection of instruments is complemented by an extensive selection of bows, cases and accessories.

Our policy is to achieve a friendly and professional service to all of our customers. We offer discounts to schools, colleges and teachers and we keep contact details of instrumental teachers throughout East Anglia.  Call into our shop or contact us by telephone, fax or e-mail.

Over the past ten years our presence in Norfolk has grown hugely. We operate a ‘surgery’ in Norwich every week, instruments in need of repair can be collected and returned and selections of instruments can be taken for approval. Please contact us to make an appointment.

We offer a full instrument rental service, see here for details.

We are pleased to provide written valuations on instruments and are agents for Allianz Musical Insurers. We can assist promptly with repairs subject to insurance claims.
